It can be either a hindrance or an aid inrelation to the group’s potential.

E.g.

How do gender expectations the types of roles leaders adopt and the sense of belonging someone expereinces within a group?

  • Male and female perceive leaders in different ways, which may cause a leader to adapt to the expectations conteracting the gender sterotypes group memebers have placed upon them.

  • a group memeber who is of the same sex of the leader may feel that they can idenity better, increasing sense of belonging.

  • e.g. A female group member may perceive a female leader to be strong, influential and capable, whereas if a male leader acts in the same way, she might perceive him to be dominant, overriding and forceful.

  • A female leader who has gender sterotypes of introverted and passive placed upon her will need to concentrate on having a leadership style where she is open, unreserved and proactive.

  • A male leader who has gender sterotypes of dominant and overriding placed upon him will need to concentraton being an effective leader by being a less commanding presence and not overriding his fellow group members.

The ways group is portayed in media can have + and - impact on people in the group and how group is perseved.
e.g
- impact: if a political party is scrunited by a range a media, members in that group may become stressed and not perform as well. Members on the public may chose to base their view on how the party is depicted in the media.
+ impact: aids growth of groups through advertising and can raise awareness
