The Black Plague. Beforehand, the lingua francas of the elites and churches were French and Latin, respectively, while the peasants stuck to English. However, after the Black Death wiped out about 1/3 of Europe’s population, the lower classes gradually rose in status and influence, making way for English to become more and more often used as the language of instruction until it became Europe’s lingua franca.

Canberra is a small city sitting right between Sydney and Melbourne—neither of which would accept the other as the nation’s permanent capital—and so in 1908, Canberra was named capital as a compromise between the two aforementiones cities.
