Regulates the amount of light entering the microscope
Diaphragm
brings objects into rapid, but coarse focus
Coarse adjustment knob
brings objects slowly into fine focus
Fine adjustment knob
Carry the microscope with one hand under the base and one hand on the arm of the microscope. Don't forget to wrap the cord!
Carrying the Microscope
Directs light into the microscope
mirror or lamp
What are the steps used to use a microscope?
1. Turn the microscope on
2. Start with scanning obj. after inserting slide.
3. Find and focus on your specimen; use coarse adj. knob
4. Switch to low obj.
5. Focus with only fine adjustment knob
6. Switch to high if needed.
7. Focus with only fine adj. knob
8. Locate specimen; record data
9. Remove slide and dispose it
10. Switch back to scanning obj. for others to use
11. Turn off microscope and carry it back to it's assigned position.
Allows light to pass through the stage
Stage Opening
Contains a lens capable of 10x magnification
Eyepiece
A Compound Light Microscope...
1. Has more than one lens
2. Is commonly used in science classes
3. Can magnify objects up to 1000 times
Total magnification of a microscope is determined by...
multiplying the eyepiece lens magnification to the objective lens magnification.
The fine adjustment knob must be used to...
sharpen focus when using high-power magnification.
Which power can you only use the coarse adjustment knob?
You can only use the coarse adjustment know under low power. The fine adjustment knob can be used for all three powers on the microscope.
