Down syndrome

Aetiology:

• Plaque/poor oral hygiene

• Occlusal problems, habits

• saliva and systemic factors: immune system, vascular and nutritional factors

Perio features:

• high incidence of periodontitis

• small conical roots

• increased in rate of destruction

leucocyte adhesion deficiencies (LAD)

• lecucytes (including neutrophils) in LAD are severly impaired preventing migration from the blood into tissues

• LAD - lack a fully functioning adhesion molecule needed to stick to endothelium so the leucocyte can traverse the vessel and reach the tissues
