Kasaysayan
The Filipino term for history, derived from the English word 'history' and branch of knowledge studying events in the lives of people, nations, and the world in past times.
Historia
The Greek origin of the word 'history,' which means inquiry and investigation.
Simbolo (Symbols)
Signs that describe important events and ideas in a community's history, ranging from flags to statues.
Tradisyon (Tradition)
Customs inherited from the past that provide identity and understanding of a community's history.
Kwento (Stories)
Narratives or legends that bring past experiences to life and connect them to the present through the narration of events.
Heograpiya (Geography)
Derived from the Greek words 'geo' (world) and 'graphia' (description), it is the study of the characteristics of a place and how it affects human life.
Kultura (Culture)
The total way of life of a group of people, including language, beliefs, tradition, food, clothing, art, religion, and inherited customs.
Kabuhayan (Livelihood)
The collection of human, community, and institutional activities related to the production, distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods.
Ilawod
A native word meaning 'below' or 'low place,' referring to people who live in coastal, lowland, or riverbank areas.
Ilaya
Refers to the higher parts of land, such as mountains or hills, and areas far from the river or sea; it is the opposite of Ilawod.
Kaingin Farming
A traditional farming method used by Ilaya residents involving the burning of parts of the forest to plant crops like rice, sweet potato, corn, and taro.
Badjao
A group believed to derive their name from the Malay word 'Bajau,' referring to 'sea gypsies' or people who live by the sea.
Lepa-lepa
Traditional houseboats where Badjao families traditionally live.
Sea Gypsies
A common English term for the Badjao, who are excellent divers and 'sea travelers' whose lives are centered around the water.
Moro
An ethnic and religious group primarily residing in the Bangsamoro region, with a name derived from the word 'Moors.'
Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL)
A law approved in 2018 and implemented in 2019 that created the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Igorot
Derived from Spanish words meaning 'people of the mountain' ('i-' for people of and 'golot' for mountain), inhabiting regions like Benguet, Ifugao, and Kalinga.
Banaue Rice Terraces
A historic contribution of the Igorots, often considered the 8th Wonder of the World.
Gangsa
A traditional indigenous musical instrument (gong) played by the Igorot people during rituals and dances.
Tayaw
An Igorot dance of thanksgiving performed for ritual or religious purposes.
