Brow ridge
A bony ridge located above the eye sockets; it is prominent in gorillas and reduced in humans.
Prognathous
A physical condition of having a protruding lower jaw, characteristic of African apes.
Human facial profile
Characterized by a flatter face compared to African apes and the presence of a chin.
African Ape facial profile
Characterized by sloping faces and the absence of a chin.
Diastema
A gap between the teeth; it is large in chimpanzees and absent in modern humans.
Canines
Teeth that are large and prominent in chimpanzees but small in modern humans.
Palate shape (Chimpanzee)
Described as being Rectangular or U-shaped.
Palate shape (Modern human)
Described as being gently curved or C-shaped.
Cranial ridges
Bony structures on the skull where large chewing muscles attach to move powerful jaws; present in gorillas and chimpanzees but absent in humans.
Raw food diet impact
Associated with ape-like ancestors, requiring larger teeth (especially canines), powerful jaws, and cranial ridges for muscle attachment.
Cooked food diet impact
Associated with early Homo species using fire, resulting in less processing required, smaller teeth and jaws, and the absence of cranial ridges.
