Define Human Development
creating an environment in which people can develop to their full potential and lead productive, creative lives according to their needs and interests
Define Human Development Index (HDI)
a tool used to measure and rank countries levels of social and economic development by providing a single statistic, between 0 and 1, based on the countries life expectancy, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling and GNI per capita
Define Safe Water
water that is not contaminated with disease causing pathogens such as bacteria, or chemicals such as lead and mercury
Define Access to Sanitation
the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human urine and faeces and also the maintenance of hygienic conditions through services such as garbage collection
Define Poverty
deprivation that stems from a lack of income, that presents as a lack of material resources such as food, shelter, clean water and healthcare
Define Discrimination
when a person or group of people is treated differently from other people
Define Sustainability
meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Define Economic Sustainability
ensuring the average incomes in all countries are adequate to sustain a decent standard of living and continue to rise in line with inflation and living costs in the future

creating an equitable society where all people can access social resources such as human rights, education, healthcare and connection to community, both now and into the future

ensuring the natural environment is used in a way that will preserve resources into the future

sustaining the variety of different plants, animals and microorganisms and the ecosystems of which they play important roles in maintaining. it is essential to provide resources for human development such as oxygen, wood products, food and safe water
