What are the six levels of body organization in order from simplest to most complex?
Chemical level, cellular level, tissue level, organ level, organ system level, and organismal level.
What constitutes the chemical level of organization?
It involves atoms (the smallest unit of matter) and molecules (one or more combined atoms, such as sugar and vitamins).
What are macromolecules and organelles?
Macromolecules are complex molecules like proteins and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Organelles are microscopic subunits in cells composed of macromolecules.
What is the cellular level of body organization?
It consists of cells, which are the smallest living structures and the basic units of structure and function in organisms.
What are the four primary types of tissues at the tissue level, and what are their basic functions?
How is the organ level defined, and what is an example?
It consists of organs formed by two or more tissue types performing specific functions, such as the small intestine, which contains all four tissue types.
What characterizes the organ system level and organismal level?
The organ system level contains related organs working together for a common function. The organismal level is the highest level, where all body functions work interdependently in the living organism.
What positions define standard anatomic position?
Upright stance, feet parallel and flat on the floor, upper limbs at the sides with palms facing anteriorly (toward the front), head level, and eyes looking forward.
What is the anatomical distinction between a section and a plane?
A section is an actual slice or cut made to expose internal anatomy, whereas a plane is an imaginary flat surface passing through the body.
What is a coronal plane?
A vertical plane dividing the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions; also called a frontal plane.
What is a transverse plane?
A horizontal plane dividing the body into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) portions; also called a cross-sectional plane.
How do midsagittal, sagittal, and oblique planes divide the body?
A midsagittal plane divides the body into equal left and right halves. A sagittal plane divides structures into left and right at any site parallel to the midsagittal plane. Oblique planes pass through structures at an angle.
What do the directional terms dorsal, ventral, proximal, and distal mean?
Dorsal means toward the back; ventral means toward the stomach; proximal means nearer to the trunk; distal means farther from the trunk.
What two main regions partition the human body?
The axial region (head, neck, and trunk, forming the main vertical axis) and the appendicular region (composed of upper and lower limbs).
What are the four abdominal quadrants?
Right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant, right lower quadrant, and left lower quadrant.
What are the nine abdominal regions?
Right hypochondriac region, epigastric region, left hypochondriac region, right lumbar region, umbilical region, left lumbar region, right iliac region, hypogastric region, and left iliac region.
What do the directional terms cranial (cephalic), caudal, and rostral mean?
Cranial (cephalic) means at the head end; caudal means at the rear or tail; rostral means toward the nose or mouth.
What do the directional terms medial, lateral, deep, and superficial mean?
Medial means toward the midline; lateral means away from the midline; deep means on the inside; superficial means on the outside.
