fertilisation
The fusion of a male and a female gamete to form a zygote.

zygote
The single cell formed when two gametes fuse.

pollen
Contains the male gametes of a flowering plant.

stamen
The male part of a flower (anther + filament).

anther
Produces pollen.

filament
Stalk that supports the anther.

carpel
The female part of a flower (stigma, style and ovary).

stigma
Sticky surface that receives pollen.

style
Connects the stigma to the ovary; the pollen tube grows down it.

ovary (flower)
Contains the ovules; becomes the fruit after fertilisation.

ovule
The female gamete of a plant; becomes a seed after fertilisation.

insect-pollinated
A flower adapted to spread pollen using insects (bright, scented, sticky pollen).

wind-pollinated
A flower adapted to spread pollen by wind (small, dull, lots of light pollen).
