Anatomical Position
Body erect, face forward, feet
together, palms face forward
Supine vs Prone
Supine: lying face upward
Prone: lying face downward
Superior vs Inferior & Anterior vs Posterior… Another name for Anterior vs Posterior is……
Superior = above
Inferior = below
Anterior (Ventral) = front
Posterior (dorsal) = back
Proximal vs Distal & Medial vs Lateral
Proximal = nearest point of attachment (hip joint, shoulder joint)
Distal = distant from the point of attachment
Medial= closer to midline
Lateral= away from midline
3 Body Planes
Median / Sagittal - median= through midline (50/50), sagittal= left or right of midline (60/40). slice, left & right halves
Frontal or Coronal- slice, anterior and posterior sections
Transverse or Cross - horizontal slice, superior & inferior sections
What types of Cuts are these through an organ
Longitudinal: cut along the length of an organ
Cross/Transverse: cut at right angle to length of the organ (perpendicular)
Oblique: cut at any angle, not a right angle
