Immune System

Pathogen
An organism that causes disease, such as bacteria or viruses.
Nonspecific defense system
The part of the immune system that prevents pathogens from entering the body.
Phagocytosis
The process by which white blood cells ingest and destroy pathogens.
White blood cells
Cells of the immune system that play a key role in protecting the body from infection.
Antibodies
Protein molecules produced by white blood cells that specifically target and neutralize pathogens.
Antitoxins
Chemicals produced by white blood cells that neutralize toxins released by pathogens.
Ingest
To take in (as in the case of white blood cells taking in pathogens).
Specific immunity
The immune response that develops antibodies against specific pathogens to protect against future infections.
Toxins
Chemicals released by bacteria that can make us feel unwell.
