What are monoclonal antibodies?
Identical antibodies that have been produced from the same immune cell
What are monoclonal antibodies used for?
Targeting chemicals and cells in the body and so have many different medical uses
What are lymphocytes?
A type of white blood cell that makes antibodies but can’t divide
How are monoclonal antibodies produced?
Scientists collect mice lymphocytes which have been stimulated to produce a specific antibody and they are combined with tumour cells to form a cell called a hybridoma. The hybridoma can divide to produce clones of itself which all produce the same antibody and the antibodies are collected and purified
