Forces Vocabulary

Vocabulary flashcards defining fundamental concept terms related to forces and motion.

Force

A push or pull exerted on an object

Balanced forces

forces acting on an object that combine and form a net force of zero.This force will not cause a change in the motion of a moving object, and will not cause a nonmoving object to start moving.

Unbalanced force

This type of force produces a change in motion, such as a change in speed or direction.

Contact force

This type of force requires objects to touch or bump into one another

Non-contact force

pushes and pulls that result without the direct touching of objects acting at a distance (gravity and magnetism)

Net force

The combination of all forces acting on an object

Magnetic force

It is the force that arises due to the motion of charged particle within the magnetic field.

Gravity

an attractive force that acts between any two masses

Electrostatic force or electrical force

It is the attractive or repulsive interaction between any two charged objects.

Friction

A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact

Law of Gravity

every object is attracted to one another, level of attraction is based on mass and distance
