Recognize vulnerabilities of different elements exposed to specific hazards means?
identifying which people, structures, systems, or environmental features are likely to be damages or affected when a particular hazard occurs.
How to recognize vulnerability?
Identify the hazard (flood, earthquakes, typhoon, drought, etc)
Determine what is exposed (people, building, infrastructure, envirionment,)
Assess susceptibility to damage based on location, construction, quality, age, preparedness, and available resources.
Evaluate potential impacts on safety, health, property and livelihoods
What is a Hazard?
is any source, situation, condition, or activity that has potential to cause harm to people, property, and environment or a combination of these. Harm may include injury, illness, damage, loss, or adverse effects on health and safety.
What is the relationship of vulnerability of Hazard, Exposure, Vulnerability, and Disaster Risk
Disaster risk arises when a hazard affects exposed people or assets that are vulnerable to damage. Disaster Risk = Hazard + Exposure + Vulnerability
What is the republic act that is also known as the Disaster Risk Reduction Management(DRRM) Act of 2010?
RA 10121
What are the types of Hazards?
Physical, Biological, Ergonomic, Safety(Mechanical), and Psychosocial
Physical Hazards
environmental factors or energy sources that can cause injury without necessarily involving a substance. Ex. excessive noise, extreme heat or cold, radiation, vibration, poor lighting, electrical shock
How would the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies would describe Hazard?
they would describe it as a threatening event, or probability of occurence of a potentially damaging phenomenon within a given time period.
Natural Hazards
Storm Surge, Typhoon, Landslide, Drought, Heat Wave, Flashfloods, Forest fires/Bush fires
Biological Hazards
exposure to living organisms or biological materials that can cause disease or infection. Ex. bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold, blood and bodily fluids, contaminated food
Technological Hazards
Oil Spill
Kaingin
Logging
Dynamite Fishing
Mining
Excessive Hunting
Famine
Ergonomic Hazards
hazards arising from poorly designed work tasks, equipment, or workstations that strain the body. Ex. heavy lifting, repetitive motions, awkard postures, poorly adjusted desks and chairs
Psychosocial Hazards
work-related factors that affect mental health, well-being, and social functioning. Ex. Stress, bullying, harassment, excessive workload, lack of job control, and work violence.
Safety (Mechanical) Hazard
are unsafe conditions, tools, machines, or equipment that can cause accidents, injuries, or physical harm. Ex. Slipperery floors, unguarded machinery, falling objects, working at heights, exposed wiring.
How does recognizing vulnerabilities help communities?
they help by helping communities to plan mitigation measures, reduce risk, and improve disaster preparedness.
