The neural mapping of motor and sensory functions, which is not fixed and can change via neuroplasticity following injury, during skill training, or in early development through meaningful experiences.

A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that training that drives specific brain functions can lead to an enhancement of function.
Specificity
A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that the nature of the training dictates the nature of the plasticity.
Repetition Matters
A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that inducing plasticity requires sufficient repetition.
Intensity Matters
A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that inducing plasticity requires training intensity.
Time Matters
A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that different forms of plasticity occur at different times during training.
Salience Matters
A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that the training experience must be sufficiently salient and meaningful to induce plasticity.
Age Matters

Transference
A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that plasticity in response to one training experience can enhance the acquisition of similar behaviors.
Interference
A principle of experience-dependent plasticity stating that plasticity in response to one experience can interfere with the acquisition of other behaviors (e.g., suboptimal limping habits formed while waiting for a knee to heal).
