Electrocardiogram (ECG)
A graphic recording of the electrical wave patterns from the activity of cardiac muscle
Principle Deflections
Any major peak or trough that is above or below the baseline
P Wave
Initial peak that represents atrial depolarization
Means that immediate atrial contraction will follow
Generated by firing of the SA Node
QRS Complex
Trough, Peak, Trough of large wave
Represents depolarization of the ventricles, followed by ventricular contraction
Generated by firing of the AV node
T Wave
Represents ventricular repolarization, followed by muscle relaxation
Peak after QRS complex
Muscle still peaks because it is still in a small state of contraction, cardiac muscle will never be fully relaxed
