nervous system
controls every thought, action, and emotion. communicates by electrical and chemical signals. has 3 functions including sensory input, integration, and motor output.
sensory input
uses millions of receptors
monitors changes occurring inside and outside of the body
integration
processes and interprets sensory inputs and decides how and when to act
motor output
activates effector organs to cause a response
CNS (central nervous system)
brain (integration center)
spinal cord (transmits info to and from the body)
PNS (peripheral nervous system)
spinal nerves (carry impulses to and from the spinal cord
cranial nerves (carry impulses to and from the brain)
ganglia (collections of neuron cell bodies)
Sensory (afferent) division (PNS)
carries signals from receptors to the CNS
somatic sensory division (PNS) (afferent)
carries signals from receptors in the skin, muscles bones, and joints
visceral sensory division (PNS) (afferent)
carries signals mainly from the viscera of the thoracic and abdominal cavities.
