Which catalyst would you choose for industrial water electrolysis, and why?
Catalyst A (55 mV) is the better catalyst because it reaches the benchmark current density of 10 mA cm⁻² with a lower overpotential. This means less additional voltage and therefore less electrical energy are required to drive the reaction, making the electrolysis process more energy efficient.
Why are both very weak and very strong M–OH binding unfavourable?
Weak binding → OH doesn't adsorb/react.
Strong binding → intermediates/products cannot desorb.
Intermediate binding → highest catalytic activity.
Why do α-MnO₂ and β-MnO₂ behave differently?
Different crystal structures produce different surface structures, giving different catalytic behaviour.
