A form of government where a king or queen rules the country

Due Process

The idea that the government must follow fair rules before taking away a person’s rights or freedom. In a trial, it ensures a fair hearing, the right to know the charges, to present evidence, and to have a lawyer defend them.

French and Indian War

A war in North America between Britain and France

Taxes

Money that people and businesses have to pay to the government. This money is used to pay for things like schools

Boycott

A form of protest where people refuse to buy or use goods or services from a company or country to show disapproval.

Ally

A country or group that agrees to help or support another in a time of need

Natural Rights

Rights that people are born with and that can't be taken away

The Enlightenment

A period in the 1700s when people began to think more about reason

Patriot

Colonists who supported independence from Britain during the American Revolution.

Loyalist

Colonists that remained loyal to Britain during the American Revolution.
