Health
A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Fight or Flight Response
The body's reaction to acute threats, involving the release of adrenaline and cortisol to enable fight or flight.
Acute Stress
Short-term stress with a clear beginning and end.
Chronic Stress
Long-term, prolonged stress with no clear end.
Exhaustion Phase
The stage of the general adaptation syndrome where the body's resources are depleted after prolonged exposure to stress.
Major Life Stresses
Large, typically one-off stressful events that have a big impact on life, such as divorce or the death of a loved one.
Daily Hassles
Ongoing stressors, such as daily commutes or work-related issues.
Perceived Stress
An individual's perception and interpretation of their experiences as stressful, considering their resources to cope.
Negative Affect
Long-term trait experience of negative emotions such as anger, depression, and anxiety.
Type A Behavior Pattern
Characterized by competitiveness, impatience, hostility, and a sense of urgency.
Type B Behavior Pattern
Characterized by relaxation, calmness, and a more easygoing approach to life.
Stress Management Techniques
Strategies and practices aimed at controlling a person’s levels of stress, particularly chronic stress, to improve daily functioning.
