Building Information Modelling (BIM)
A collaborative process for creating and managing digital, intelligent 3D models that represent the physical and functional characteristics of a project, serving as a central data repository for the entire project lifecycle.
BIM-based Model Checking (BMC)
The process which processes the content of information in BIM-files according to rules specified as pre-defined procedures to verify the design and performance of building systems.
Three Components of BMC Systems
The core division of BIM-based model checking consisting of software, rule sets, and BIM-files.

Structure and Architecture Synergy Framework (SAS)
A framework that focuses on the interplay between architecture and structures, emphasizing a learning process where form is constrained by function, site, designer vision, and structural logic.
Clash Detection
A primary practical application of BMC used to identify physical geometric interferences or conflicts between building elements in model checking software such as Navisworks or Solibri Model Checker.
Rule Sets
Collections of pre-defined rules within a specific topic (such as clash detection, space validation, or MEP solutions) that define the scope of review in BMC.
AutoCodes Project Study (Fiatech 2012)
A study demonstrating that manual checking yielded uncertain results across jurisdictions, with one jurisdiction identifying 1 issue while another raised 43 issues on the same design.
Design Issue Cost Impact (Lopez and Love 2012)
A survey of 139 projects showing that design issues increased direct costs by 6.9% and indirect costs by 7.4% of the total contract value.
Code-Checking Time Allocation (Conover 2007)
A study finding that on average, 3% to 5% of the design time on a construction project is currently devoted to code-checking.

BMC System Integrated Relationship
The triangular interaction between the logic in a rule set, the information content in a BIM file, and the functions in model checking software.

Logic Rule Evaluation Outcomes
The flowchart showing the three possible results when information from a BIM file is processed through a logic rule: Pass, Fail, or Not checked.
Structural Analysis
The engineering process of determining how a structure will behave under applied loads by calculating internal forces, stresses, strains, and displacements.
Structural Design
The engineering process of selecting materials, specifying dimensions, and creating a structure's geometry to safely withstand calculated loads.
Loads
Forces and environmental factors that a structure must resist, including gravity (dead loads), human occupancy (live loads), wind, and seismic forces.
Structural Detailing
The process of translating conceptual engineering designs into detailed, fabrication-ready drawings and specifications for elements such as beams, columns, and connections.
Designer Detailing
The traditional procurement approach where the designer's office is responsible for preparing reinforcement detail drawings and schedules.
Contractor Detailing
An alternative procurement approach where specialist concrete contractors prepare reinforcement details tailored to their preferred construction methods and schedules.
Structural Drawings
Drawings for concrete structures that provide the dimensional data needed for setting out and constructing formwork, plans, sections, elevations, and bar specifications.
Reinforcement Drawings
Drawings that describe and locate reinforcing steel in relation to the concrete outline, including trimming bars around holes and fixings.
Standard Details
Repetitive structural or reinforcement details that are fully worked out and drawn to a large scale for application across multiple locations.
Record Drawings (As-built)
Original construction drawings updated with written descriptions and suffix references on drawing numbers to document all changes made during construction.

Structural Detailing Abbreviations
Standard abbreviations used on structural drawings, including RC for reinforced concrete, blk for blockwork, FFL for finished floor level, and SSL for structural slab level.

Standard Sheet Sizes (Table 3.1)
British Standard drawing sheet dimensions ranging from A0 (841×1189 mm) to A4 (210×297 mm).
Drawing Sheet Margins and Borders
Standard drawing specs requiring a 20 mm filing border on the left, a minimum border of 20 mm for A0/A1 or 10 mm for A2/A3/A4, and a margin line thickness of at least 0.5 mm.
Levels and Elevations
Vertical dimensions expressed in metres on drawings, measured relative to an established job datum linked to the Ordnance Survey datum.
