apparent rari nantes in gurgite vasto,

Scattered swimmers appear in the huge abyss,

arma virum, tabulaeque, et Troia gaza per undas.

and the weapons of the men and the planks, and the Trojan treasures throughout the waves.

iam validam Ilionei navem, iam fortis Achati,

Now the storm overpowers the strong ship of Ilioneus, now the ship of strong Achates, 

et qua vectus Abas, et qua grandaevus Aletes, vicit hiems;

and a ship on which Abas sails, and the ship on which the aged Aletes sails; 

laxis laterum compagibus omnes

with the frameworks of the hulls loosened all the ships

accipiunt inimicum imbrem, rimisque fatiscunt.

receive hostile sea water, and the ships fall apart with cracks.
