Ionizing Radiation
Radiation that possesses sufficient energy to cause the ejection of electrons from atoms, resulting in the ionization of atoms and potential biologic effects.
Thermionic Emission
The process of boiling off electrons from a heated cathode filament in the X-ray tube, controlled by milliamperage (mA).
Cathode
The negative terminal of the X-ray tube that serves as the source of electrons.
Anode
The positive terminal of the X-ray tube containing the target where high-speed electrons are abruptly decelerated to produce X-rays.
Kilovoltage Peak (kVp)
The technical factor that controls the potential difference across the X-ray tube, accelerating electrons into high-speed motion.
Glass Envelope
The component of the X-ray tube that maintains a vacuum necessary for efficient X-ray production.
Classic Coherent Scattering
An interaction involving very low-energy X-rays where the photon interacts with the atom as a whole, causing excitation without ionization or energy transfer.
Photoelectric Effect
An interaction in the diagnostic energy range where an incoming X-ray photon is completely absorbed, ejecting an inner-shell electron and producing characteristic radiation; responsible for the largest contribution to patient exposure.
Compton Scattering
An interaction in the diagnostic energy range where an incoming photon collides with an outer-shell electron, releasing a recoil electron and a scattered photon; responsible for the greatest occupational exposure.
Exposure (X)
A measure of ionization in air resulting from exposure to X-rays or gamma rays, measured in Coulombs per kilogram (C/kg), where 1 unit produces 2.08×109 ion pairs per cubic centimeter of air.
Air Kerma
The measure of kinetic energy transferred to a unit mass (kilogram) of air, expressed in Gray (Gya) or Joules per kilogram (J/kg).
Absorbed Dose (D)
The radiation energy absorbed per unit mass of an absorbing object or tissue, expressed in Gray (Gy) or Joules per kilogram (J/kg).
Effective Dose
The product of Absorbed Dose (Gy) and Quality Factor (QF), measured in Sieverts (Sv), representing the overall biological risk of radiation exposure.
Becquerel (Bq)
The SI unit of radioactivity defined as the quantity of radioactive material in which one nucleus disintegrates per second (1d/s=1Bq).
ALARA
An acronym for 'As Low As Reasonably Achievable,' representing the overarching principle of keeping radiation doses minimal.
Annual Whole-Body Effective Dose Limit
The maximum recommended annual radiation dose for occupational workers, set at 50mSv.
Threshold Dose Response
A biological response relationship where damage occurs only after radiation exposure exceeds a specific minimum dose level, with higher doses increasing severity.
No-Threshold Dose Response
A dose-response model indicating that any amount of radiation dose, no matter how small, carries a proportional risk of biological damage.
Law of Bergonie and Tribondeau
A law of radiobiology stating that cellular radiosensitivity is determined primarily by the rate and duration of cellular mitosis.
Somatic Cells
All body cells responsible for body functions, excluding germ cells (reproductive cells).
Acute Radiation Syndrome
A total body response caused by receiving large amounts of radiation exposure in a few minutes, progressing through prodromal, latent, and manifest stages.
Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) Dosimeter
The most common personnel monitoring device used to measure X-ray and gamma radiation exposure, typically worn for two-month intervals.
Human Diversity
The variety of human societies and cultures, also known as cultural diversity, which examines similarities and differences among individuals.
Bias
A prejudgement that influences behavior or decisions, often altering how an individual perceives, evaluates, or treats others.
Assimilation
The process where individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds give up their original culture and identify completely with another.
Biculturalism
The ability to negotiate and function successfully across two or more different cultures simultaneously.
Ethnocentrism
A form of cultural bias in which a person believes their own culture is superior to all others.
Cultural Competence
The set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies that enable healthcare professionals to deliver respectful and effective care to diverse populations.
