The Amendments of the Constitution

Amendment 1

Protects freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.

Amendment 2

Grants the right to keep and bear arms.

Amendment 3

Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in private homes without consent.

Amendment 4

Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Amendment 5

Provides due process, protection against self-incrimination, and prohibits double jeopardy and eminent domain without compensation.

Amendment 6

Guarantees a speedy, public trial by jury and the right to counsel in criminal cases.

Amendment 7

Guarantees a jury trial in civil cases.

Amendment 8

Prohibits excessive bail, fines, and cruel and unusual punishment.

Amendment 9

Declares that rights not listed in the Constitution are still retained by the people.

Reserves powers not given to the federal government to the states or the people.

Limits lawsuits against states in federal courts.

Revises the procedure for electing the President and Vice President.

Abolishes slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.

Grants citizenship and equal protection under the law to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S.
