Need
Must have to live; something critical that one can't live without.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
A theory proposing that humans have a set of needs structured in a hierarchy, from basic physiological needs to self-actualization.
Physiological Needs
The most basic human needs, such as eating, sleeping, breathing, and excretion, which appear at birth.
Safety Needs
The need for security of the body, family, employment, health, and property.
Love and Belonging
The need for social relationships, including friendships, family connections, and intimacy.
Esteem Needs
The need for self-esteem and respect from others; includes confidence and feeling valued.
Self-Actualization
The realization or fulfillment of one's talents and potential, achieving personal growth.
Cognitive Needs
The need to learn and understand, added in an update to Maslow's pyramid.
Aesthetic Needs
The need for balance, form, and appreciation of beauty, recognized as important by Maslow.
Transcendence
The desire to help others achieve self-actualization, positioned as a higher need beyond self-actualization.
Criticism of Maslow's Theory
The critique that the data is elitist, subjective, difficult to test, and assumes lower needs must be satisfied before higher needs.
Innate Needs
Needs that we are born with; how we meet those needs is influenced by nurture.
