Sexual Selection
Process by which individuals that possess certain heritable traits are more successful at attracting and obtaining mates
Anisogamy
gametes of different sizes
Intrasexual selection
competition within a single sex for mates. ex. male-male competition
Intersexual Selection
one sex chooses mates based on certain traits. ex. female mate choice
Sexual Dimorphism
differences between sexes in traits often related to attracting and obtaining mates.
Allele Frequency
proportion of a specific allele of a gene in a population of organisms
Genetic Drift
changes in allele frequencies due to random sampling. It happens by chance
Gene Flow
movement of genetic material from one population to another
Founder Effect
a form of genetic drift where a new population is established. This leads to a loss in genetic variability
The Modern Synthesis
defines biological evolution as a change in allele frequencies in a population over one or more generations
Population Genetics
study of genetic variation within/among a population. And the evolution processes that generate and maintain this variation
Gene Pool
all the alleles for all gene in the population
Inbreeding
mating of individuals who are closely related or self-fertilization. Over several generation it will increase proportion of homozygous offspring
Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium
Allele frequencies in a population will remain stable.
