Independent variable
The factor that is manipulated or changed in an experiment to test its effects on the dependent variable.
Dependent variable
The factor that is measured or observed in an experiment, which is affected by changes in the independent variable.
Stereotyped behavior
A consistent, repetitive behavior that is genetically programmed rather than learned.
Comparative method
A research approach used to compare behaviors across different species to understand the evolutionary origins and functions.
Circadian rhythm
A 24-hour cycle of biological processes that are influenced by external cues like light and darkness.
Associative learning
A learning process in which an animal learns to associate one stimulus with another, such as in classical conditioning.
Controls in experiments
Elements of an experimental design used to ensure that the results are due to the independent variable, not external factors.
Randomization
A method used in experimental design to ensure that treatment groups are statistically equivalent and helps reduce bias.
Generalization
The ability of an animal to respond to a new stimulus that is similar to a previously learned stimulus.
Insight learning
The ability of an animal to solve a problem the first time it is exposed to a complex situation, often without trial-and-error.
