Embargo Act 1807

A law enacted in 1807 that prohibited American ships from trading in all foreign ports. It aimed to protect American interests but resulted in significant economic hardship.

Non-Intercourse Act 1809

A law enacted in 1809 that allowed American trade with all countries except Britain and France, intended to minimize the economic impact of the Embargo Act while still maintaining neutrality.

Did not really work.

Chesapeake-Leopard Affair 1807

A naval clash in 1807 where the British ship HMS Leopard attacked the American USS Chesapeake, escalating tensions between the US and Britain. Led to Embargo Act 1809.

Lewis and Clark Expedition 1804-06

The journey undertaken by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1804 to 1806 to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and find a route to the Pacific Ocean.

Louisiana Purchase 1803

1803 land acquisition from France that doubled the size of the nation. 

Jefferson really wanted this because it was more room for agriculture and aligned with his vision for the US.

Judiciary Act 1801

An act that would have allowed the Federalists to control the court system by increasing the amount of federal judges(+42).

Marbury vs. Madison Case

A Supreme Court case that argued whether or not James Madison should deliver the documents appointing the new judges.

Instead of making a decision, John Marshall ruled the Judiciary Act unconstitutional and thus strengthened and solidified the Judiciary Branch.
