Movement
Actions that cause a change in the position or location of an organism.
Respiration
The chemical reactions that release energy from nutrients inside living cells; energy fuels metabolism.

Growth
Permanent increase in size and dry mass, due to an increase in cell number, cell size, or both.
Reproduction
The production of offspring, increasing the number of the same kind of organism.
Excretion
The removal of toxic substances, waste products of metabolism, and substances in excess from an organism.
MRS GREN
Mnemonic for Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition; used to remember the seven characteristics of living organisms.
