Equilibrium Constant (K)
A numerical value that expresses the ratio of products to reactants at equilibrium.
Small k (k) vs Large K (K)
Small k refers to the rate constant, while large K refers to the equilibrium constant.
K_eq Expression
An expression representing the equilibrium constant, generally set up as products over reactants raised to the power of their coefficients.
Product Favoring Reaction
A reaction where a large K_eq value indicates that products are favored over reactants at equilibrium.
Strong Acid
An acid that dissociates almost completely in solution, resulting in a large K_a value.
Acetic Acid
A weak acid found in vinegar, which does not dissociate completely in solution, resulting in a small K_a value.
Solid and Liquid Phases in K Expressions
Solids and liquids do not appear in the equilibrium expression since their activity is defined as 1.
Manipulating K Expressions
Inversion is required for reverse reactions; multiplying coefficients affects K value exponentially.
Kc vs Kp
Kc is based on concentrations, while Kp is based on partial pressures of gases.
ICE Table
A table used to calculate equilibrium concentrations based on Initial concentrations, Change in concentrations, and Equilibrium concentrations.
