New cards

a force applied on an object can cause a turning effect about a fixed point called a..

pivot

2
New cards

what can this turning effect do?

it helps us carry out an action with little force, such as

  1. removing a lid

  1. tightening a nut

3
New cards

what happens when a force exerted causes the transfer of energy between objects?

the size and/or shape of the object may change.

4
New cards

what is pressure?

Pressure is an effect of force acting on an object.

5
New cards

formula for pressure

pressure= force/area

6
New cards

what is the unit for pressure?

Pascal (Pa) / N/m2

7
New cards

What happens when we move deeper underwater?

A higher pressure acting on our body

8
New cards

What are characteristic of air particles?

  1. Occupies space

  2. Light

  3. Has mass

9
New cards

what happens when we are at a height above sea level?

There are fewer air particles pushing down on us. Hence, the atmospheric pressure exerted on us decreases.

10
New cards

How does atmospheric pressure cause cyclones?

The sun warms the water on the ocean surface. This causes the water on ocean surface to evaporate. The warm air rises, creatin gan area of lower air pressure near the surface of the ocean. Air from the surrounding area of higher air pressure flows into the area of lower air pressure. This process repeats and differences in air pressure over the ocean causes storms to develop.

Explain how the liquid is pushed up into the boys mouth when he sucks on the straw of his bottle.

When the boy sucks on a straw, some air is removed from it. The air pressure inside the straw decreases and becomes lower than the surrounding atmospheric pressure. THe higher atmospheric pressure pushes the liquid up the straw and into the boys mouth.

12
New cards

what do we say when energy is transferred and a force is applied causing an object to move?

We say that work is done thru the apllication of the force

13
New cards

What are the conditions that must be satisfied for work to be done on an object?

  1. A force has to be applied on the object

  2. The object has to move

  3. The object moves in the same direction as the force applied on it

14
New cards

When work is done,

energy is transferred
