Javelin History
Hunting and warfare tool; part of Ancient Greek Olympic Games; Modern Olympic event (Men since 1908, Women since 1932).
Phases of the Javelin Throw
Run-Up, Withdrawal, Delivery, Release, Follow-Through.
Run-Up
Builds speed and rhythm (13–17 steps).
Withdrawal
Javelin pulled back behind the head.
Delivery
Lead foot plants, body rotates, arm whips forward.
Release
At 30–36° angle for maximum distance.
Follow-Through
Continue motion to stay balanced and avoid fouls.
Grip Styles
American, Finnish, Fork.
American Grip
Thumb and index grip; easy for beginners.
Finnish Grip
Held between index and middle finger; gives more power.
Fork Grip
Javelin rests between fingers like a fork; good for control.
Foul Throw Rules
Step over the foul line; javelin does not land tip-first; lands outside the sector; illegal techniques like slinging.
