New cards

What is the fist movement of water (where does it go?)

Roots

2
New cards

How is the root hair celll adapted to absorb water

Penetrates easily in the soil

Large SA;VR

Each hair has thin surface layer (Quick osmosis)

Solutes in cytoplasm - maintains water conc gradient between oil water and cell

(Soil water has low conc of dissolved minerals than inside the cell - water moves in root hair cells by osmosis)

3
New cards

What occurs in symplast pathway

Continuous cytoplasm of living plant cells connected through plasmodesmata

  • R.h has more W.P than in adjacent cell

  • Water moves into cytoplasm (more dilute)

  • Water moves along R.H.C (continues until xylem reached)

  • The R.H.S maintains conc gradient for more water to move back in

4
New cards

What is the apoplast pathway

Water fills spaces between loose ope network of fibre in cell wall

Water pulls from a poplars behind - cohesive forces between water molecules - creates tension = continuous flow of water through open cell wall (little to no resistance)

5
New cards

What is the last stage of movement of water after the apoplast pathway

Move across apoplast and symplast until endodermis is reached (cells surrounding xylem +phlome)

6
New cards

Why can the water not go through the endodermis

WATERPROOF LAYER

Casparain strip (water cant go further and forced into cytoplasm

Joins water in symplast pathway

7
New cards

What happens when water is entered again in symplast pathway

Xylem is less dilute in cytoplasm compared to endodermal cells

Mineral ions transported by active transport to xylem from endodermal cells

8
New cards

What happens after mineral ions are transported by active transport

Xylem = W.P decreases - water moves in by osmosis

Therefore water then returns to the apoplast pathway into xylem

9
New cards

What is root pressue

Mineral ions actively pumped into xylem for water movement

R.P gives water push up xylem (but not major factor)
