declarative sentence

interrogative sentence

imperative sentence

A sentence that requests or commands.

exclamatory sentence

A sentence that expresses a strong feeling

simple sentence

a sentence consisting of one independent clause

compound sentence

A sentence with two or more independent clauses, often joined by one or more conjunctions.

complex sentence

A sentence that includes one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

compound-complex sentence

a sentence having two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.

rhetorical question

A question asked merely for effect with no answer expected.

rhetorical fragment

a sentence fragment used deliberately for a desired effect

balanced sentence

a sentence made up of two parts that are roughly equal in length, importance, and grammatical structure

parallel structure

repetition of the same pattern of words or phrases within a sentence or passage to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance

Juxtaposition

occurs when a writer places two things side by side as a way of highlighting their differences

Repetition

a device in which words, sounds, and ideas are used more than once to enhance rhythm and to create emphasis

the repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginning of successive clauses

Asyndeton

deliberate omission of conjunctions in a series of related clauses

Polysyndeton

the deliberate use of many conjunctions for special emphasis
