Leadership styles
A manager will use a leadership style based on their ability, personality, what has worked in the past and what employees respond to best. A manager should understand a range of styles so they can adapt their approach according to circumstances, urgency and the people involved. 4 styles include: Autocratic, participative and situational.
Autocratic leadership style
All decisions are made by the judgement of the autocratic leader, who has authority over other employees who are directed to implement their decision. The autocratic manager rarely involves others in the decision making process and focuses on making sure staff follow the rules and keep up with the pace of production. Used in workplaces that are based on standardised, repetitive processes e.g. CEO of a business setting policies and company’s direction.
Benefits of Autocratic leadership style
Quick decision making which is effective in a workplace where there is a need for urgent action. Provides clear direction and expectations which can improve efficiency within the business. Effective in situation where the manager is the only one with the experience and expertise.
Disadvantages of Autocratic leadership style
Little creativity and innovation where employees are not encouraged to share their ideas or feedback where the group may miss out on valuable insights and creative solutions. Can lead to low moral and high employee turnover. Creates dependency and hinders the development of future leaders
Participative Leadership style
Employees are involved in planning and decision making in the workplace. Although the manager may still make the final decision, they are based on the ideas and feedback from staff.
Advantages of Participative Leadership style
Can increase job satisfaction because it gives employees more control over how they work. Employees are more motivated, skilled and experienced, where they are better prepared for a promotion as they have already had to make harder decision. The manager has less responsibilities having to organise resources and help solve problems that may arise.
Disadvantages of Participative leadership style
Takes more time for decision to be made. A strong leader is often need to lead a discussion between staff members so that there is clear communication of ideas.
Situational leadership style
Where a manager uses the most appropriate behaviours and adapts their leadership style depending on the situation, changing their methods of communication and decision making, and can utilise multiple styles at once. managers need to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of each styles and apply this knowledge to a work situation or business challenge.
