Canine Vehicle
A canine vehicle is equipped with a back seat cage including a screen to separate the canine from front seat passengers.

The unmanned aircraft system
Mission of the UAS program
To provide aerial support and assistance to the Valparaiso Police Department in a multitude of situations.
Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS)
Refers to the Aircraft and associated peripherals.
Unmanned Aircraft (UA)
Refers to the Aircraft.
Certificate of Authorization (COA)
Authorization issued by the Federal Aviation Administration to a public operator for a specific UA activity.
Camera Operator (CO)
Controls all aspects of the camera including recordings during operations and maintain direct communication with the RPIC.
Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC)
Functions as the operator of the UAS, is ultimately responsible for the operation, and is responsible for launch and landing procedures.
Operator Control Unit (OCU)
Consists of a remote control and tablet with touch screen capability utilized to control the system and provide data and video transmitted by the UA.
Visual Observer (VO)
Responsible for monitoring the UA and remain in direct communication with the RPIC to relay any potential obstacles or hazards presented to the UA.
UAS Team (UAST)
Consists of members of the department selected operate the UAS.
UAS Commander (UASC)
Responsible for the overall care of UAS equipment and insures the UAS and the UAS Team is mission ready.
Above Ground Level (AGL)
Altitude expressed in the actual number of feet measured above the ground.
Notice to Airmen (NOTAM)
Notice containing information concerning the establishment, condition, or change in any component, the timely knowledge of which is essential to personnel concerned with flight operations.
EQUIPMENT STORAGE for UAS
The UAS and all related equipment will be stored in the UAS Room and available for missions as needed.
Valparaiso Police Department UAS Pilot Certification Course
The UAS Pilot Certification Course covers Department Policy, Current COAs, FAA Guidelines, Relevant Indiana Laws, UAS Manufacturer Guidelines, General Operations, Special Operations, Relevant CFR Parts 91 and 107
UAS team members must maintain currency as both a RPIC and VO by successfully completing
A minimum of three (3) operations (including training operations) every ninety (90) days.
UAS Commander (UASC) responsibilities
Ensuring the UAS is mission ready, maintaining all logs and documentation, assigning duties to UAS Team members, providing training and ensuring each member is current, and satisfying the FAA Monthly Reporting Requirements.
Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC)
Responsible for UAS assembly, flight preparation, post flight procedures, disassembly and storage procedures.
Visual Observer (VO)
Maintaining a visual observation of the UA while it is in flight and alert the RPIC of any conditions which affect the safety of flight.
Camera Operator (CO)
Controls all aspects of the camera including recordings during operations.
Duty Time Restrictions
Eight (8) hours of operation time in a twenty-four (24) hour period.
