Ecological restoration
The process of assisting the recovery of degraded, damaged, or destroyed ecosystems, which includes restoring ecological function, biodiversity, and natural hydrology.
Native plants
Plant species adapted to local climate, soils, wildlife, and seasonal conditions that support local biodiversity and require fewer supplemental resources once established.
Invasive species
A non-native organism that establishes and spreads in a way that causes ecological, economic, or human-health harm.
Restoration plan
A document that defines project goals, target conditions, treatment methods, schedules, safety requirements, materials, monitoring methods, and success criteria.
Root collar
The part of a plant where the stem meets the roots; it should be planted level with or slightly above the surrounding soil to prevent rot or oxygen restriction.
Adaptive management
A restoration approach where actions are monitored and adjusted based on observed results and new information, such as modifying methods if a planting has low survival.
Mulch
Material applied to conserve soil moisture, moderate temperature, suppress competing vegetation, and reduce erosion, kept away from the stem to prevent rot.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Task-specific safety gear such as sturdy boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hard hats, and chemical-resistant clothing for herbicide work.
Tick removal procedure
The process of using fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin and pulling steadily upward, then cleaning the area and monitoring for symptoms.
Exclusion zone
A required safety area surrounding an operator of a chainsaw or brush cutter that other crew members must not enter without receiving acknowledgment.
Erosion
The loss of soil caused by concentrated runoff, exposed ground, steep slopes, or loss of vegetation; managed by using native plants, mulch, or erosion-control blankets.
Restoration monitoring
The collection of field data such as plant survival, species abundance, and percent native cover to support project evaluation and future management decisions.
Hand tool safety
Practices including inspecting tools before use, maintaining a stable stance, keeping others outside the working radius, and using controlled movements.
Sensitive species protocol
A procedure to avoid disturbing unexpected rare species or habitats, involving recording the location and notifying a supervisor without disclosing information publicly.
Heat-related illness prevention
Safety measures including regular hydration, scheduled breaks in shade, wearing breathable clothing, and monitoring coworkers for symptoms like dizziness or confusion.
Herbicide spill protocol
The immediate action of stopping the source, notifying a supervisor, preventing the material from entering waterways, and using an approved spill kit.
Field data
Consistent information, including GPS coordinates and treatment dates, which supports project evaluation, regulatory reporting, and maintenance planning.
Planting depth
The specific vertical placement of a plant; if too deep, it restricts oxygen and causes rot, and if too shallow, it exposes roots to drying and stress.
Plant stress signs
Indicators such as wilting, yellowing leaves, premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and fungal symptoms that suggest poor establishment or environmental damage.
Adaptive planting method
The adjustments made to timing, species selection, or follow-up frequency when observed results, like low survival, differ from project goals.
