Crust

Outermost layer of earth; solid, thin, least dense layer

Continental crust

Less denser, older, thicker type of crust

Oceanic crust

Denser, younger, thinner type of crust

Mantle

Second-outermost layer of the earth; mostly solid, heavy, makes up most of earth’s volume/mass

Lithosphere

Upper part of mantle, moves as rigid block

Asthenosphere

Middle part of mantle, solid, flows slowly

Mesosphere (earth)

Bottom part of mantle

Outer core

Second-innermost layer of earth; hot, dense, liquid

Inner core

Innermost layer of earth; hot, dense, solid

Troposphere

Atmospheric layer closest to earth’s surface; thin, dense, weather occurs here, mostly nitrogen

Stratosphere

Atmospheric layer second-closest to earth; no weather, sometimes airplanes, dry, less dense, contains ozone layer

Mesosphere (atmosphere)

Layer of atmosphere between stratosphere and thermosphere

Thermosphere

Atmospheric layer furthest from earth’s surface; temp goes up as alt increases due to UV radiation

Ionosphere

Within thermosphere; contains Aurora Borealis

Exosphere
