Deng emerges as de-facto leader quickly after rehabilitation and Hua appoints him back to old positions
Deng builds popularity with propaganda and mobilises support within the party to outmanoeuvre Hua and oust him by 1980
Weakened opposition by criticising the Cultural Revolution as many of his opposition played important roles in it
Industry/commerce
Incentivised efficiency
Factories and corporations encourage to make profits and modernise production
Attempts to connect wages to productivity
Encouraged international trade and investment with Open Door Policy
Deng set up Special Economic Zones in the south-east with investment capital so they could work in a free market economy
Education
Certain schools received better funding and staffing to create more experts to run industry
Government encouraged overseas study
Overseas teachers brought in to fill gaps of expertise’
One-Child Policy
Government recognised control and ability to feed population was integral to economic growth and success and so established One-Child Policy
Made up of Three Prongs:
Propaganda campaign
Economic penalties for a scond child
Danwei (work organisations) had birth control quotas
Resulted in lower birth rates, higher abortion rates
Girls often abandoned or killed in rural areas as it was believed they couldn’t take care of their families
