(1) why qualitative data collection?
some data are intrinsically difficult to anticipate prior to being collected
(2) why qualitative data collection?
not everyone can be expected to supply data in a structured quantitative form
(3) why qualitative data collection?
Researchers may have problems in pre structuring data collection on some topics and so feel more comfortable using a data collection method that allows a degree of exploration.
qualitative data collection
essence provide extensive, detailed and ‘rich’ data for later analysis and it is open to researchers to decide whether a qualitative or a quantitative analysis best suits their purposes

interviews
can be broadly defined as a face-to-face verbal interchange in which there are two persons, that is the researcher or the interviewer and the other is the respondent or the interviewee. It appears to be like a conversation, but this conversation is more with a specific purpose
qualitative interview
involves the researcher or his investigators interacting on a one- to-one level with a respondent, who has been selected by the researcher as one of the subjects for the study. The interviewer puts questions to the respondent on a particular subject matter and the respondent’s replies are noted down verbatim, where possible or recorded as an audio report
4 types of qualitative interview
Formal
general interview guide
standard/open-ended questions
closed/ fixed response interviews
Informal (Types of Interview)
as is implied, the respondents are identified and involved in a pleasant conversation (is with a specific research purpose that has been already determined.)
(Unstructured the participants will lead were the interview go)
interviewer talks in general
After the interviewee/wer were acquainted
purpose of the research is put across
and told what is expected in this study
and how important is the respondent response
no predetermined questions
any answer should be provided without hesitation (no right or wrong answer)
general interview guide
In this, every effort is put in to ensure that no important points are left out and the manner in which the questions should be asked and the sequences are kept up
Conducting interview to get all the info we need to-be covered
semi-structured interview (wer has follow up questions but after the answer needed was provided he will proceed again with the guide qs)
Standard/open-ended questions
This type of interviews gives considerable scope for the respondent to answer fairly in detail his own ideas and opinions on the particular topic instead of answering or tick marking the answers only.
