Theory
A statement that explains or describes a relationship among events, concepts, or ideas, which evolves through observations, deductions, and research.
Model
An example or pattern that helps explain a theory, such as an airplane model used to explain the theory of flight.
Psychodynamics
The study of basic needs, drives, conflicts, perceptions, values, attitudes, belief systems, and cultural influences that shape every individual.
Charles Darwin
A naturalist (1809−82) whose theory of evolution had a lasting impact on understanding the world and human behavior.
Symbolic and magical thinking
The belief system where the workings of the world were understood through ideas like people being possessed or controlled by evil spirits, which persisted until the late 1800s.
Frameworks
The role theories play for helping professionals in describing relationships among people and various aspects of their environments.
