Dermaptera
An order of insects (earwigs) characterized by chewing mouthparts, two pairs of wings (forewings protect; hindwings used for flight), cerci/pincers at the end of the abdomen, and hemimetabolous metamorphosis.

Isoptera
An order of insects (termites) with chewing mouthparts, two pairs of wings in alates (reproductives), social castes (workers, soldiers, reproductives/alates), hemimetabolous metamorphosis, and a role as a decomposer.

Mantodea
An order of predatory insects (praying mantises) featuring chewing mouthparts, two pairs of wings, raptorial front legs, and hemimetabolous metamorphosis.

Blattodea
An order of insects (cockroaches) featuring chewing mouthparts, two pairs of wings, hemimetabolous metamorphosis, and functioning as decomposers/scavengers in soil and leaf litter.
Hemiptera - Heteroptera
Suborder of true bugs featuring piercing/sucking mouthparts, two pairs of wings with hemelytra forewings crossing to form an X-pattern, a triangular scutellum in the center of the back, and hemimetabolous metamorphosis.

Hemelytra
Modified forewings characteristic of Hemiptera - Heteroptera that cross over the back to form an X-pattern.

Hemiptera - Sternorrhyncha
A group of hemipterans including aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, whiteflies, and psyllids; characterized by piercing/sucking mouthparts, two pairs of wings when present (many wingless), hemimetabolous metamorphosis, and often small, sedentary, or sessile habits producing honeydew.

Hemiptera - Auchenorrhyncha
A group of hemipterans including cicadas, leafhoppers, sharpshooters, and planthoppers; characterized by piercing/sucking mouthparts, two pairs of wings held roof-like over the abdomen with uniform forewing texture, strong jumping/flying abilities, and hemimetabolous metamorphosis.

Thysanoptera
An order of very small insects (thrips) with piercing/sucking mouthparts, two pairs of wings when present, hemimetabolous metamorphosis, often residing on leaf undersides or inside developing buds, and causing brown spots or streaking on flower petals.

Coleoptera
An order of insects (beetles, such as lady beetles, weevils, scarab beetles, and longhorned beetles) with chewing mouthparts, two pairs of wings featuring hardened/sclerotized elytra as forewings, and holometabolous metamorphosis.
Elytra
Hardened or sclerotized forewings characteristic of the order Coleoptera (beetles).

Neuroptera
An order of insects (green and brown lacewings) with chewing adult mouthparts, piercing/sucking larval mouthparts, two pairs of wings, and holometabolous metamorphosis; larvae are predatory biocontrol agents.

Hymenoptera
An order of insects (ants, bees, and wasps) featuring chewing and/or siphoning adult mouthparts, chewing larval mouthparts, two pairs of wings, and holometabolous metamorphosis.

Lepidoptera
An order of insects (butterflies and moths) with siphoning adult mouthparts, chewing larval mouthparts (caterpillars), two pairs of scaly wings, and holometabolous metamorphosis.

Siphonoptera
An order of wingless ectoparasitic insects (fleas) with piercing/sucking adult mouthparts, chewing larval mouthparts, and holometabolous metamorphosis.

Diptera
An order of insects (flies and mosquitoes) characterized by having only one pair of wings, piercing/sucking or siphoning adult mouthparts, maggot larvae, and holometabolous metamorphosis.

Araneae
An order of non-insect predatory arachnids (spiders) featuring two body regions, eight legs (four pairs), zero wings, and chelicerae mouthparts.

Acari
An order of non-insect arachnids (mites) featuring one body region, eight legs (four pairs), zero wings, and chelicerae mouthparts; roles include predators, herbivores, and decomposers.
Cerci
Pincer-like terminal abdominal appendages characteristic of order Dermaptera.
Raptorial Front Legs
Grasping front legs modified for capturing prey, characteristic of order Mantodea.
