Creating the test environment
A task that is often overlooked when planning a systems implementation, essential for hardware and software installation.
Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
Individuals who bring deep functional expertise and specialized knowledge regarding specific business processes within their domain area to a project
Functional Product Experts
Core members of the system implementation team who possess deep, specialized product knowledge from a functional and business process perspective.
Technical Product Experts
Individuals with specialized knowledge in a specific software or technology, providing guidance and support during system implementation and integration.
Design Phase
The implementation phase where specifications are created, gaps are identified, reporting requirements are established, impact assessments are performed, and prototypes are created; it ends when the specification for each requirement is created.
Build Phase
The implementation phase involving system configuration, data conversion (rationalization, validation, loading), interface creation, and report creation; it ends when all development activities for in-scope requirements are complete.
Testing Phase
The implementation phase that includes unit testing, integration testing, system testing, parallel testing, performance testing, and user acceptance testing (UAT).
Go-Live Phase
Executes the final cutover strategy. Activities include staging final conversion data into the production environment, preparing system infrastructure, and decommissioning or phasing out replaced legacy applications.
Post-Production Support Phase
The phase following the initial rollout of a system, where ongoing assistance is provided to users to ensure the system operates smoothly and any issues are promptly addressed.
Scope Creep
The uncontrolled growth or continuous addition of new requirements, features, or tasks to a project after the original project scope baseline has been defined and approved.
Change Request
A formal submission required when a stakeholder requests new features or specifications after scope baseline completion or during testing.
Global Implementation Factors
Key international considerations including language, currency (stored in local currency and reported enterprise-wide), data management (privacy and country-specific data), and cultural issues.
Change Management
The strategic process of preparing direct, indirect, internal, and external audiences for a new system using impact assessments, readiness assessments, communications plans, and structured training.
Implementation Risks
Project hazards categorized into application risks (bugs, new software releases), business changes (reorganizations, M&A, divestitures), resource constraints (availability, turnover), and extended project duration.
Workflow
The flow of transactions through business processes to ensure appropriate checks and approvals are implemented.
Role-Based Security
A security model whose primary benefits include easier administration of user rights and permissions, as well as simplified security maintenance within the system.
