what are the three approaches to the study of perception?

  • psychological

  • biological

  • theoretical

7
New cards

what are the two categories of the psychological approach to the study of perception?

  • phenomenal/naturalistic: relies on subjective experiences (theres limits because we can’t use this on animals or babies and since it’s subjective, my experience may be way diff from someone elses, also hard to describe (think dude ranches)

  • experimental: do this—> get that. manipulate this variable—> see change in this variable. (dr. seeing how small yoiu can see words on the wall— objective). cons: not very real world— too controlled

8
New cards

what are the two categories of the biological approach to the study of perception?

  • lesion technique: cutting into brain to see how it effects whatever were looking at. cons: not humane, could effect other parts of the brain we don’t want to

  • Brain scans: PET, MRI, evoked potentials, etc…

9
New cards

what is the category of the theoretical approach to the study of perception?

  • anaologies: tyring to link eperiences to make themm make sense to ourselves (camera to eye or computer to brain)

absolute threshold:

the y-intercept. the minimum amount of stumulation we need for detection (what’s the minimum thing you can percieve)
