What are characteristics of the first city-states such as Uruk?
Because everyone had food, people started having specialized jobs. With this came bronze, which began the bronze age. Though there was a divide, urban and rural communities traded with each other. Transhumants and agrarians also traded with each other. Herding became more common as colder weather was not good for farming.

What was early Mesopotamia like?
The two rivers flooded irregularly, causing fancy irrigation systems to be formed. Water was stored and distributed. This place was a crossroads for trade, and also imported a lot of building materials. Here, each city was quite hierarchical, where a temple housing a god would be the center, and the houses would be grouped by profession. The first writing system also developed here.

What was early Old Kingdom Egypt like?
This place did not have many hinterlands, and the river governed their society. It was a cultural melting pot along the regularly flooding river. The geography was diverse, and the citizens responded by trying to keep ma' at (a balance). Here, religion was centralized, and the leader had to appease the gods, but citizens could worship independently. Priests linked man and gods. Here, writing was reserved for the elite. Collapse of this place was caused by drought and the leader's "ownership" of the land.

What was the Indus River valley (Harappans) like?
Here, the steppe people influenced the citizens of this area. They had waterways used for baths and a plumbing system. They traded stones and gems. We don't know much about them as we have not deciphered their language yet.

What was the Yellow and Yangzi river valley cultures like?
Here, citizens grew rice and millet. This area was slow to urbanize because of bad geography and not many diverse plants and animals to work with.

What characterized the Yangshao and Longshan peoples?
The first civilization mentioned was replaced by a second. Pottery from the first civilization traveled far. The second civilization built many defensive walls to keep out invaders. A drought united these people under a king.

Geography and dispersed islands prevented cities to grow at this time. They had some outside contact, but not much.

This place was isolated geographically, and the community was war based. They controlled some trade, and traded with the Ageans.

This area was filled with small warring communities that fought over resources. Here, the temperatures were cooler. These wars promoted warfare and metal inventions.
