Carbonate (CO3²-)
Test: add dilute acid, then test for carbon doixide gas
Result: effervescence, carbon dioxide produced
Chloride (Cl^-) - in solution
Test: acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate
Result: white ppt.
Bromide (Br^-) - in solution
Test: acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate
Result: cream ppt.
Iodide (I^-) - in solution
Test: acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate
Result: yellow ppt.
Nitrate (NO3^-) - in solution
Test: add aqueous sodium hydroxide, then aluminium foil; warm carefully
Result: ammonia produced
Sulfate (SO4²-) - in solution
Test: acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous barium nitrate
Result: white ppt.
Sulfite (SO3²-) - in solution
Test: add a small volume of acidified aqueous potassium manganate (VII)
Result: (sulphur dioxide produced) turns the acidified aqueous potassium manganate (VII) from purple to colourless
