Artificial Intelligence
The ability of computer systems to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Virtual Assistant
A computer program such as Siri or Alexa that assists humans by responding to questions or performing activities with voice commands.
Facial Recognition
Technology that is capable of recognizing and identifying individuals based on their face, usually found in phones or security systems.
Recommendation Algorithm
A feature that websites such as Netflix or Amazon employ to suggest television shows, movies, or products according to what you like or previously watched.
Eliza
The first chatbot, created in 1960, that could understand and respond to natural language.
Deep Blue
A supercomputer designed specifically for playing chess, armed with powerful algorithms and an extensive database of possible moves, and created by IBM.
Siri
A personal assistant whose success hinged on its natural language understanding capabilities; the system could interpret and process users’ spoken commands.
AlphaGo
Succeeded due to reinforcement learning and deep neural networks, learned from millions of Go games to improve strategy and decision-making.
ChatGPT
Advancing language understanding, the model’s ability to understand context and produce coherent and contextually appropriate responses has opened up new possibilities for AI in content generation, customer support, and personalized experiences.
Narrow AI (Weak AI)
AI systems designed to perform a specific task or set of tasks. They can handle routine tasks, perform data analysis, and make predictions within a specific context but cannot perform tasks beyond their specialization.
General AI (Artificial general intelligence, or AGI)
Systems with cognitive abilities similar to humans but remains theoretical and has not yet been achieved. It would possess human-like reasoning, learning, and problem-solving abilities and would be able to transfer knowledge across various domains.
Super AI (Artificial superintelligence)
Represents the most advanced form of AI, surpassing human intelligence in all respects and outperforming humans in every intellectual and practical task.
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
A machine learning technology that gives computers the ability to interpret, manipulate, and comprehend human language.
Natural Language Understanding (NLU)
A subfield of NLP that deals with the interaction between computers and human languages, allowing computers to understand and interpret human language.
Natural Language Generation (NLG)
A specific area within the broader field of NLP, which deals with how computers understand and generate human language.
DeepMind
An Alphabet subsidiary, DeepMind leads in AGI with innovations like AlphaZero in reinforcement learning, medical image analysis tools, and language models that simplify scientific research.
OpenAI
Research company focused on ensuring AI benefits humanity. Its GPT-3 and GPT-4 models generate human-like text, helping with translation, writing, education, and healthcare communication.
NVIDIA
Produces high-performance GPUs that power AI innovations in applications such as autonomous vehicles, computer vision, and language processing.
Microsoft
Microsoft has incorporated AI into its productivity software, Microsoft 365, with features such as intelligent document processing, meeting transcription, and real-time translation, all of which enhance user productivity and collaboration.
Amazon
Applies AI in numerous applications beyond consumer shopping. Via AWS, it provides tools such as SageMaker (for AI model construction), Rekognition (for image/video analysis), and Alexa (its voice assistant).
Meta (Facebook)
Centers on social media and virtual reality AI. Its work enables better speech and facial recognition, content curation, and user personalization on sites such as Facebook and Instagram.
