Uterotonics
Medications that stimulate uterine contractions, primarily used to prevent or treat postpartum hemorrhage.
Oxytocin

Ergometrine (methylergonovine)
An ergot alkaloid that causes sustained uterine contractions.
Prostaglandins
Synthetic substances like misoprostol and carboprost that mimic natural prostaglandins to stimulate uterine contractions.
Carbetocin
A synthetic analogue of oxytocin that is longer-acting.
Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH)
Excessive bleeding that can occur after childbirth, which uterotonics are used to prevent or treat.
Administration Route for Uterotonics
Typically administered intravenously or intramuscularly based on the type used and patient condition.
Side Effects of Uterotonics
Can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, high blood pressure, and rare seizures.
Precautions for Uterotonics Use
Should not be used in patients with preeclampsia, eclampsia, heart disease, kidney disease, or certain types of uterine fibroids.
