Substance
Any physical matter or chemical compound—particularly a psychoactive drug, alcohol, or medication—that affects the body or mind.
Substance Use
The safe, occasional, or moderate consumption, ingestion, or intake of legal or illegal items following medical guidelines or legal limits without causing negative health or social problems.
Substance Misuse
Using a legal substance or prescription drug improperly, in the wrong way, or for the wrong reason due to a mistake or poor judgment rather than an attempt to get high.
Substance Abuse
The intentional, harmful, and repetitive use of legal or illegal substances for non-medical reasons or to get high, despite negative physical, mental, social, or legal consequences.
Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
A classification applied when substance use progresses into harmful patterns, misuse, or dependency.
Legal Substances
A common category of substances that includes alcohol, tobacco/nicotine, and caffeine.
Illicit Drugs
Illegal street drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
Counselling
A type of talk therapy where a client meets with a trained professional helper who listens without judgment in a safe, confidential space to facilitate the client in solving their own problems.
Confidentiality Exceptions in Counselling
The rule that session information is kept strictly private unless the client is perceived to be a danger to self or others, or provides written permission.
Medical Detox
The phase of substance abuse treatment that handles physical withdrawal, complementing counselling which treats the mental and behavioral aspects.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
A talking tool used in counselling to fix thinking errors and change bad thought patterns.
Motivational Interviewing
A counselling tool used in substance abuse treatment to boost change and help clients want to stay clean and healthy.
Individual Therapy
A type of treatment involving one-on-one private talks with a professional.
Group Therapy
A type of treatment where a person meets with others who share similar recovery goals.
Family Counseling
A type of treatment aimed at healing broken trust and teaching loved ones how to support recovery.
