Acoustic efficiency
Shaping the vocal resonator in such a way as to provide an acoustic “boost” to the sound; getting the most “gain” with the least expenditure of
energy.

Acoustic flow
Acoustic flow refers to pressure sound wave propagation, which travels at the speed of sound. Acoustic flow is what carries the sound signal to listeners.
Airflow
Steady flow refers to the airflow which passes through the
glottis and vocal tract, dispersing and declining rapidly upon leaving the mouth. It is not the carrier of acoustic energy.
Appoggio
A breathing strategy to manage the active muscles of inspiration and expiration during phonation in a manner that reduces laryngeal tension (optimizes laryngeal efficiency)
Diaphragm
The primary muscle of inspiration; dome-shaped; arches up inside the ribs, dividing the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
ml/sec
The physical unit of measurement for pulmonary volume flow/rate
Passive elastic recoil
The movement from various forces (tissue elasticity, orientation to gravity) that restores the respiratory system to its resting level.
Semi-occluded vocal tract
